Oligodendrocyte cells of the CNS play a key role in multiple disease states and serve as the major insulating cell type of the brain. Loss of oligodendrocytes is observed in multiple sclerosis due to autoimmune destruction, and inherited loss of oligodendrocyte cells, or function, may leads to leukodystrophies; a typically fatal condition, prefigured by loss of sensory functions and motor activity.
